The Perfect Blend of Liberty Style and Modernity in Milan

In the heart of Milan, the multidisciplinary studio NOE9 has transformed an Art Nouveau apartment into a masterpiece of contemporary design. This restoration project celebrates the timeless charm of early 20th-century artistic and architectural style, enhanced by an innovative use of Mipa terrazzo.

During the project implementation, NOE9’s architects worked with “sartorial” care to enhance the apartment’s original decorations, creating a unique environment that seamlessly blends history and modernity, all while tackling the challenge of an unusual pentagonal floor plan.

A distinctive feature of this renovation is the creative use of Mipa terrazzo, particularly the Fibre from the Rug-effect decorative tiles collection.

Despite its design departing from typical Art Deco floral compositions, it harmonizes perfectly with the apartment’s style due to its geometric patterns that complement the perimeter diagonals accentuated by custom-made furnishings.

A play of mirrors reflects both the original Liberty elements and modern space interpretations, enhancing the visual impact of the terrazzo flooring while paying homage to the past and embracing the present.

The selection of materials, ranging from brass to raw iron to woven wood, was meticulously chosen to recreate an intimate and welcoming atmosphere. The lighting scheme, carefully studied, combines scenic allure with everyday functionality.

The restoration of the FM apartment is an extraordinary expression of bridging the past and present, demonstrating how tradition can be reinterpreted in a modern context. In this sense, Mipa terrazzo plays a fundamental role in imparting a distinctive character to the spaces, showcasing how materials traditionally considered "old" can be used to create modern and innovative environments.
